A little background on the song:

My good friend Helmuth Weil came to me recently and asked if I could write a song to accompany him on a charity run he is currently undertaking. Helmuth is running from Koblenz to Rotterdam in a project called ‘Rock n Rhein till Rotterdam’ - he is running between 60 and 72 km a day to raise money for charity.

We hit Tonstudio Liebling in Duisburg about a month ago with the usual suspects to record the track! A big thank you to Judith Renkema (bass), Luuk Adams (drums), Sanne Groefsema (Vocals), Robin van Veen (Vocals), Leon den Engelsen (Keys), Jan Schroeder (engineering), Dave Manton (Mix & Master) and Andreas Heller (artwork) and of course Helmuth Weil for providing us with the opportunity to make the song!

We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it and we wish Helmuth all the best and a lot of strength to push through and achieve his goals! If you want to get involved or donate to the cause, you can find out more on Helmuth Weil’s social media pages.

But for now, enjoy the song and have a great day!

At the beginning of January I sat down with Jörg Feyer for a nice virtual interview. We discussed my reasons for moving to Europe a decade ago, my musical journey since then, the rise of online streaming and of course my soon to be released album 'Allen Keys & Broken Bits'.

Get yourself a copy at your local magazine dealer!

English Translation below:

Rolling Stone by Jörg Feyer

RESPECT!

You don't really want to hear the word after the federal election campaign. But Jaimi Faulkner puts it in his mouth again in an uninhibited manner to explain why he ended up in these latitudes a good decade ago.

'I immediately noticed the respect that is shown to a singer-songwriter here,' says the man from Melbourne. After working in Berlin and Bremen, the Australian has been living in Düsseldorf for almost five years. Before that, he had played everything that could be played Down Under, and as his country's representative in the Memphis Blues Challenge, he also sniffed the deep south of the USA, 'a real turning point' because it was the birthplace of the music that shaped him.

But in the end it's just like in Australia, where 'music often only plays a supporting role, somewhere in the corner, under a flat screen. This is where people really come to listen to music. This attention attracted me’

Faulkner calls his new album 'Allen Keys & Broken Bits' a 'heart on your sleeve kind of record.’ And to start, his song 'Catch me If you can' immediately brings up the big question about the hereafter. 'For me the song already captures the whole record, also because musically it strikes different tones. Vocal harmonies have always been important to me, but I've never had a gospel choir.' Of course, this pairs well with topics like mortality and metaphysics, which above all were triggered after the birth of his three-year-old daughter, Elodie.

'I didn't want to hide behind metaphors like I used to. At almost forty, I feel like I can write about certain things because there's more weight to it now.' At the same time, he manages to not let important things sound pretentious. And when songs like 'This Masquerade' need no more than his guitar and a mic, he no longer hides behind his band - 'one take, no overdubs' either.

Respect that really pays off is a foreign word for Spotify, too. With 'Early Morning Coffee Cups' (approx. 20 million streams since 2017), Faulkner is one of these one-hit wonders, which are fobbed off with around a thousand euros for around one million streams. Of course, says Faulkner, he is also grateful 'that a song generated income. The only difficult thing is that none of my other repetoir got any attention. 'I've just ended up in a lot of coffee shop playlists because of the piece, but my other repertoire doesn't find a home.' Later, 'Early Morning Coffee Cups' led to a cooperation with a local roaster in Ratingen. The 'Morning Roast' Blend sold out quickly, but 'it's more fun than it's really a revenue stream.’

Faulkner has more fun with another streaming model with a paradoxical result. With his 'Sofa Sessions' he managed to establish closer contact with fans at a time of great distance. "I really didn't expect that when I started this livestreaming," he sums up. 'I'm fortunate to have a good home studio and wanted to make streaming as interactive as possible.' The streaming has stregthend the connection between Faulkner and his fans. Questions are asked and answered in the chat and a conversation often develops. In a concert situation, it's rather rare that someone yells a question towards the stage and expects an answer. (Laughs) Of course, something can happen but I'm usually just playing and making a little small talk after the show. With the streams, a communication develops that doesn't just take place once or twice a year, but often weekly’.

A few nice real concerts, as booked for March, would obviously not be bad. And what does Jaimi Faulkner really miss when he thinks about Australia again? Those 'iconic landscapes,' the beach, the desert. 'The smell of that red earth there is really deep inside me.' With all due respect.

'All roads lead to Rome' is perhaps the most intimate song I have ever written and recorded. It's a stripped back vocal, dobro and bass arrangement recorded in one take live ( 'warts and all' ) into a stereo ribbon microphone at Tresorfabrik Tonstudio (now Studio Liebling) by Beray Habip

The song features beautifully understated performance by Judith Renkema on the double bass.

It's with great pride that I can finally say that my latest single 'Catch Me If You Can' is released today - Friday 19th November 2021!!

The song was the last written days before our recording date at the Tresorfabrik Tonstudio in Duisburg. I was looking for a song that was a little darker sounding to complete the feel of the album and after messing about with a little repetitive chord sequence the song 'Catch Me If You Can' was born! It's most definitely a tune that leans heavily on my love of backing vocals and gospel sounds.

'Catch Me If You Can' is the lead single from my upcoming album 'Allen Keys & Broken Bits'. The song features Luuk Adams (Drums), Judith Renkema (Bass), Leon Den Engelsen (Keys) and the fabulous backing vocals of Robin van Veen & Sanne Groefsema.

Mixed and Mastered by David Manton | Artwork by Jonathan Conda | Video and Graphic Design by Andreas Heller

A little blurb about the track:

‘When I became a father, I became much more aware of life's cycle and intern, my own mortality.’ Says Faulkner. In his new single, ‘Catch me if you can’ Faulkner explores the theme of the afterlife by begging the question 'when I'm gone, will you take me by the hand? When I’m gone, will I reach the promised land?’

The single, which is perhaps the darkest lyrically that Faulkner has written to date, also takes a departure sonically from his traditional sound.

‘When I approach a new song, I always write with vocal harmonies in mind, however on this particular occasion I wanted the song to feature not just a few harmonies but a huge gospel choir.’

The Choir that is featured during the chorus is in stark contrast to the intimacy of Faulkner’s raspy voice and rough blues guitar in the verses. The Gospel Church sound of the Choir pairs perfectly with the theme of the afterlife and a higher power.

‘Catch Me If You Can’ will is released on ‘Make My Day Records’.
Jaimi Faulknertag:jaimifaulkner.com,2005:Post/67766502021-10-15T11:38:58+02:002022-05-13T09:17:59+02:00New Single | Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind | Out Now!
It's Release Day! Today my new single 'This Masquerade' is released to the world! It's my first release in over 3 years and I'm very excited to share it with you.

'This Masquerade' explores the theme of self reflection. It can be so easy to simply coast through life without truly reflecting on who you are or better yet, who you want to become. During the pandemic, like a lot of us, I was forced to stop and stand still. The busy, hectic life I had previously known was put on hold. In this moment I found myself looking back on my life, reflecting on my choices and asking myself the question, 'will I continue on the path I've been travelling or will I start anew?'

'This Masquerade' is by far the most intimate song on my forthcoming album 'Allen Keys & Broken Bits' (due for release 2022) - it was recorded around a single stereo microphone! Live! No overdubs. Just me, my voice and my old Gibson J50.

February 2021, 7PM CET
One year ago, just before the pandemic hit, I was invited by my good friend Coby Grant on her 'Small Tits, Big Dreams Tour' - A tour name that certainly received a lot of attention!!!

Needless to say, the tour was a huge success and an absolute pleasure to be involved in. It had been so long since I had had company on the road, and touring with Coby was a hoot! Hilarious car rides on the way to each show, amazing performances with brilliant audiences. 90% of the shows were sold out so the atmosphere in the room was always electric! We played 8 shows in total all around Germany as well as a show in Austria!

Every night I joined Coby on stage to accompany her on guitar and to sing harmonies, I also had the opportunity to warm up the crowd for 30 minutes before we hit the stage together. An absolute treat!

Little did we know that the pandemic would hit directly after the tour finished and live music would cease to exist.. at least for quite some time. As a result, Coby decided to fly back to her home town of Perth in Western Australia to ride out the lockdown. It is here that she has recorded a few videos for us on this weeks show, including a Jaimi Faulkner Cover version in the reoccurring segment 'cover corner!'

So tune in this Saturday 27. February 2021, 7pm CET for the last 'Live Stream Sofa Session' for a while.

Internationales Gitarrenfestival Magdeburg
I had a wonderful time on Sunday at the 2nd International Guitar Festival in Magdeburg. It was great to have the opportunity to catch up with my old friend Christina Lux and to hear her play her repertoire from her new album as well as give a songwriting workshop with her during the afternoon. I always find it interested to hear how each musician approaches the art of songwriting and I took away a few tips from the afternoon.

It was also an honour to be included in the line up with some industry GIANTS including Stephan Bormann, Antoine Boyer & Samuelito as well as Adam Rafferty who came up to me after my concert and commented on my groove!! A huge compliment coming from the ‘Groovemeister’ himself! .

The release of 'Kiss & Ride' brought with it life changing events - The song 'Highway Life' won an award for 'best song' as voted by the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society and later the MBAS further supported my band, gifting us around the world tickets which had us playing in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge, as well as giving me the opportunity to explore what Europe had to offer musically.
10 years later and I've managed to forge a strong music career in Europe, create a wonderful family and friendship circle and I now call Germany home. My 26 year old self would never have believed that my path would lead me here!

Coby and I had talked for a while about collaborating together and when Coby called and said she was looking for new songs for her soon to be released album, I suggested we get together in my studio in Duisburg Germany to do a bit of writing. After a day of collaborating our track 'All These Years' was born! We liked the track so much that we wanted to quickly capture the song while it was still fresh. With all that fresh energy running through our veins we jumped into the studio and captured the track as you can hear it today!

I'm playing the acoustic and electric guitar on the single and you can hear me singing along with Coby in the chorus. I hope you like the track as much as we enjoyed making it.

It's the first time that I will tour the UK and I'll be joining some friends on the road. It's been a wonderful journey playing with these guys and girls and on Sunday night we played our last show of the 'Back Road' Album Release tour together in Tilburg NL.

Together we've played hundreds of shows and made two great albums, but after four years we all feel it's time to explore different musical paths and have decided take an indefinite break.

On January 6 2018 we will get together one last time in Essen Germany for a farewell concert. Thanks to everyone that supported us over the years as a band. It means a lot.
